1940 Census -Milan Prison

On the top right of the 1940 Washtenaw County Census map I saw this little note:

Milan Map.JPG

ED 81-56 “Federal Detention Prison and Farm (in York Township). Now known as the Milan Federal Correction Institute.

That sounds interesting – let’s look at these census rolls! The enumerators stopped by July 17, 1940 and counted out 718 inmates on 19 census pages and another page of Staff. Below are just a few of the names:

In the second column from the right we have their prisoner number and four columns from that is there age. Prisoner George Withers (3rd row down) was 71 years old when he was counted and was a resident of Milan prison in 1935 unlike other prisoners coming from Folsom, Leavenworth and other jails.

The 1940 Census holds so much interesting information about our county!
